SUMMARY
In constant rain but thankfully little wind DLS took the game right up toOld Brighton at the
South Road oval.
After a tense opening DLS through a clever mark by Jacob Gotch scored the
opening major. Play intensified with OB having many opportunities but sturdy
defence kept them at bay . OB finally got on the board only to be answered
by a fine goal from Michael Duggan. 2 late goals by OB rounded out a good
1st quarter.
DLS with captain Ben Corin up forward dominated play and goals to Corin and
youngster Will Fenton grabbed DLS the lead. OB replied after a tense 10
minutes of high standard football given the conditions. With 32 minutes
played another DLS youngster Michael Dundon marked strongly and goaled,
quickly followed by a superb Matt Moore mark and conversion to give DLS a
handy 10 point lead at the break.
OB goaled shortly after the re commencement but then ensued a 20 minute
period of goalless play as players of both teams contested each issue
desperately. David Lowe who was having a fine game for DLS goaled after
benefiting from some strong work by Corin. With play alternating between
defences another prolonged goalless period ensued. 2 Goals to OB and another
to Ben Corin retained DLS slender margin late into the 3rd term. An OB goal
at the 33rd minute mark gave them the 3 point margin at ¾ time.
OB stung by the situation repeatedly attacked but the DLS defense with Allan
Greenhalgh, Nick Roberts, and Jeff Morel prominent prevailed. OB broke
through after 8 minutes with 2 goals in quick succession before Ben Corin
marked on the lead and converted to regain the lead for DLS. Nick Roberts
who had done a superb job on OB’s Pirrie tried valiantly to smother but the
ball skidded past him to Pirrie and his goal from the goal line sealed the
game.
It was a brave effort from the young DLS team who were reduced to 19 fit
players by half time which impacted significantly when matched with the high
rotations of OB.
On ballers Aaron Shields and David Lowe had excellent games as did
youngsters Nick Roberts and Will fenton who were ably supported by veterans
Tom Moloney and Jeff Morel while Chris Kelliher battled gamely all day in
the ruck.
